Anti Aging Q & A

What is IPL therapy?

Intense pulsed light therapy, also known as IPL treatment, is a type of light treatment for anti-aging. It directs light into the second layer of your skin, where the pigmented cells absorb it and convert it into heat. This heat then destroys pigmented features you don’t want, such as:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Rosacea
  • Sunspots
  • Varicose veins
  • Broken blood vessels

What’s involved in IPL therapy?

Intense pulsed light therapy isn’t particularly painful, but you may feel some stinging, like being snapped with a rubber band. To minimize any discomfort, Dr. Hynes will apply a cooling gel to your skin before she begins.

After your procedure is over, your skin may be sensitive and red for a few hours, as though you’ve been in the sun. The treatment area may also be a bit swollen for a short time. You may also develop short-term side effects, such as blistering or bruising, but this should go away in a few days. Furthermore, dark spots may appear darker for a few days before fading away.

Depending on the area you’re targeting, IPL sessions usually take 20-30 minutes. For the best results, you’ll likely need to return for several sessions.

How should I care for my skin after IPL treatment?

To avoid aggravating your skin, don’t use hot water on it until the treated area heals. Also, keep your hands clean, and try not to touch your skin too much.

Avoid going out in the sun for the first week. If you must go out, make sure to apply sunscreen. Likewise during that week, if you use moisturizer and cleanser at night, make sure to switch to a sensitive-skin variety.

For optimal skin results, you’ll need to attend 3-6 sessions. To give your skin time to heal, Dr. Hynes books each session about a month apart.

To keep your skin looking fresh, you may want to consider attending maintenance sessions once a year.
